Dennis Schroder unhappy about being moved to Raptors’ bench

A fortnight ago, Toronto Raptors guard Dennis Schroder found himself in familiar territory: back on the bench.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup MVP was named as a reserve for a game against the Washington Wizards on December 27.

Prior to the game, he had started all 29 games for the Raptors. Toronto won the game by 30 points.

Schroder has subsequently accepted a bench role, but he "wasn't exactly happy with the decision."

According to Sportsnet's Michael Grange, one of the reasons the veteran guard selected the Raptors in free agency this year was to avoid playing off the bench.

Schroder has spent a significant chunk of the last two seasons coming off the bench. In the 2021-22 season,

he started only 29 of 64 games for the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets combined.

Schroder started 50 out of 66 regular-season games for the Los Angeles Lakers last season. But he came off the bench in 13 of the Lakers' 16 postseason games in 2023.
